 LIQUID CONVECTION APPARATUS

For demonstrating the phenomenon of thermal convection in liquids caused by temperature variation.
Consists of a rectangular shaped borosilicate glass tube (w x h), 15 x 21cm with a funnel shaped opening at the top for filling liquids. When this tube is partially filled with water and heated at one corner after adding a dye or potassium permanganate crystals or saw dust or aluminum powder, the movement of colors or particles illustrates the formation of convection currents.

GAS CONVECTION APPARATUS (VENTILATION APPARATUS, CONVECTION BOX)

For demonstrating the phenomenon of convection in air and the principle of room ventilation.
Consists of an enamelled metal box (l x w x h), 20 x 10 x 10cm, having a sliding glass door and two glass chimneys. When a candle in a socket is placed under one chimney and a smouldering tape or touce paper is placed underneath the other chimney, the flow pattern of smoke dramatically illustrates the formation of convection currents. Candle, socket, tape or touce paper are not supplied.

 LINEAR EXPANSION APPARATUS (MICROMETER FORM)

For accurately measuring the coefficient of linear expansion of electrically conducting materials such as metal rods.
Consists of a frame of thermally rigid material consisting of two cast end pieces connected by two steel rods which appropriately hold a plated brass pipe (l x d), 500 x 25mm. The pipe acts as a steam jacket and is fitted with steam inlet and outlets as well as a tube suitable for inserting a thermometer through a rubber stopper. The pipe jacket is held in proper alignment with the help of two metal yokes, requiring minimal adjustment while removing or inserting the rod under study. One of the yokes has a knurled thumb screw to lock the steam jacket in place.
The expanding rod makes contact with a 0.01mm micrometer which measures the extent of expansion when steam is passed through the jacket. The exact point of contact of the rod and the micrometer is found with the help of an indicator lamp. The design avoids use of loose wires.
Supplied with three rods of brass, copper and steel. Steam generator and thermometer are not included.

 STEAM TRAP (WATER TRAP)

For preventing condensed water being carried over with steam prepared in a laboratory steam generator. Particularly useful when determining the heat of vaporization with a steam calorimeter.
Consists of a borosilicate glass chamber with a curved inner tube to prevent drops of condensed steam from escaping, as well as a drainage tube.

Cat. No.
